I don’t know about you, but for me time has flown by lately. Part of it is the fact that the day my last newsletter posted, I ended up being asked to help get RUNAWAYS #4 finished off. It was really, really late, so I ended up loading up the caffeine and giving up on sleep to knock out some pages at a pace that…
Well, I don’t really love. I really like having a bit of time to sit with a page once it’s “finished” so I can come back to it the next day (or two) with some fresh eyes, catch things that will certainly bug me later on when it’s printed…
But that ain’t always how it goes! I still enjoyed working on the Runaways, though, especially since – as I mentioned last time – I’ve been enjoying the MIDNIGHT SUNS game lately, and Nico figures pretty prominently in that.
Anyway … here’s a small peek at those pages!

In the middle of that deadline run, I also had to ink and color the cover for this year’s DREAD THE HALLS one shot, which I’m pretty excited about. Chris and I have cooked up something fun, and which pulls no punches. I’m not allowed to show that full cover off yet, but I wanted to whine/brag that I also fit time to do THAT into the RUNAWAYS deadline sprint /:)

But I’m back to inking the second MALICENT BLACK book, now. On the one hand, I’m ready to wrap this thing up, get it out there so everyone can read it, but on the other … coming back to Mal always feels a bit like coming home. I’m really proud of this character and the work Drew and I are doing on this, and I hope when our next Kickstarter launches, people see just how much of ourselves we’ve poured into it.

It kinda feels like a tough time on Kickstarter now, or maybe a time of transition. I’m sure the economy isn’t helping things, and then you’ve got some publishers using the platform to fund some pretty big, expensive books … and there are only so many readers and so many dollars to go around. It’s easy for creators or projects to get lost in the crowd. Preparing to launch a crowd-funded book in this environment is a little nerve-wracking, so I hope you’ll not only have our back, but help us to spread the word when the time comes.

Meanwhile … outside of comics (yeah, it’s not all comics, all the time in the Ferguson household.) We went and saw WEAPONS a few nights ago, and I just keep thinking about it. I won’t spoil anything for you, but I will say … if you like horror, you should go see this. And if you like horror but feel like you’ve kind of seen it all when it comes to horror … then you should DEFINITELY go see this. This one really landed with me, and in a year where we’ve gotten SINNERS, 28 YEARS LATER, and now WEAPONS … man, it’s inspiring. As much as I love any story told well … deep down I’m such a horror guy. Keep your judgments in your pocket, you. I just gravitate that way. Even Malicent Black, with all the trappings of superheroes and sci-fi that might be there … is a horror book as much as anything, right?

Part of it is that I feel like you can use horror to touch on anything. It can be as complex or as simple as you want, it can be obvious or sneaky, but most great horror – I think, anyway – tends to be about a little more than the monster in the closet.
So what does all of THAT mean, anyway? And who cares??? Well, in order: 1) I dunno, and 2) Probably nobody!
I guess it’s just my long-winded way of saying that I need to make more horror comics. There’s still so much to be done in that space, even after all this time. When am I gonna make these horror comics? In all the free time I have? Yes, exactly. All the … free … time … I have.
Sigh.
Before I go … another piece of art from my wall!

This one was a gift from my best pal, and it’s something I’d wanted for a long time … a Sal Buscema Spider-Man piece. See, Sal inked me waaaaaaay back when I was working on DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS for IDW, and that was amazing. One of my favorite times in this business, honestly. It was not only a great learning experience, seeing what he did with my feeble, less-than-confident lines, but the phone calls! Every couple of weeks, usually when Sal got the latest batch of my pencils, he’d give me a call with any questions or thoughts he might have regarding the pages, but really … that was only about the first five minutes of the call. The next couple of hours (no, really) were just chatting with Sal about making comics, about the business now vs the business then, stories about the old days at Marvel, honestly … whatever Sal felt like talking about, I was more than happy to be on the other end of that line! Just an absolute gem, that guy.
But as far as the work goes … my favorite piece from the D&D run is actually THIS … it’s a doodle Sal did, I dunno, for a warm-up or for fun, or to see how a face I was drawing SHOULD have looked, maybe 🙂 And it’s on the back of one of the sequential pages I have from that series. And no, I’ll never sell this.

Anyway … despite working on D&D with Sal and thus having plenty of pages where he inked over my pencils, what I really wanted was a Spider-Man page from the man. And my pal landed this, with inks by Jimmy Palmiotti. I love this page. Two of the absolute nicest creators I know, working on my all-time favorite character … can’t lie, I come into my office in the morning, coffee in hand, look at this page … and smile. Nowadays, we need to be grateful for every smile we get.
SPEAKING of smiles … this week is my wife’s birthday, and she brings me more smiles than I’d ever think possible. She is, quite simply, the absolute best.

Have a good one!
